Chairman Talks: A Veteran’s Journey Through Warriors of Hope

This message is dedicated to our donors, sponsors, patrons, ambassadors, members of our Independent Advisory Board, and our Development and Fundraising Committee. It is also for everyone who has attended and supported our fundraising events this year.

What follows are the words of a veteran who recently took part in our Warriors of Hope mental health and PTSD programme, delivered in partnership with the Zoological Society of London.

As CEO of SAVSIM CIC, I want to thank every single person who helps make this work possible. Together, we are making a real difference.

A moment of crisis

“​Late 2024 brought devastating news that shattered my world: the profound loss of a dear friend who was truly like a daughter and a cherished member of our family. That December marked a turning point; my heart ached, and my life changed fundamentally.

At a crucial moment, Jason offered a lifeline I couldn't refuse. He introduced me to an incredible opportunity through a mutual contact he made with the charity SAVSIM..”

Finding support through Warriors of Hope

“​Jason sent me the application for a residential course with ZSL. Out of numerous applicants, I was one of six successful candidates offered a placement on their animal-assisted therapy course, specifically designed for veterans and blue light personnel struggling with their mental health.

​The residential was transformative. We engaged in day-to-day activities, learned invaluable recovery strategies, from understanding the CBT cycle to practicing somatic experiencing, and participated in daily meditation.

This practice alone taught me to listen to my body, acknowledge ignored emotions, and begin the tough, neglected process of mourning. The physical shift from stiff shoulders and heavy breathing to relaxed shoulders and light, deep breaths was truly amazing.”

The power of connection and compassion

“​The entire team from SAVSIM is incredible. I would recommend this journey to anyone; though I was skeptical initially, the lessons learned, the bonds and friendships made, and the overwhelming sense of peace that followed were worth every single effort.

If he hadn't pointed me towards SAVSIM, I honestly don't know where I would be today, as negative thoughts were drawing closer.
