A Day at the Rugby 7’s Tournament: Celebrating Sports, Mental Health, and Community

Sierra Six Media

As the CEO of SAVSIM CIC, I recently had the honour of attending the rugby 7’s tournament held at the impressive AFC Wimbledon stadium on Plough Lane. This visit was particularly special for me, as it brought back memories of the significant role Bargate Consulting played in transforming this venue from an old dog track into a state-of-the-art 9,300-seater stadium during the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic.

A Stadium Reborn

Walking through the stadium, I couldn't help but feel a deep sense of pride and accomplishment. Our team at Bargate Consulting acted as Development and Project Managers for this ambitious project. We overcame numerous obstacles, including the unique challenges presented by the pandemic, to deliver a modern facility that now serves as a hub for sports and community events. The transformation is a testament to the dedication and expertise of everyone involved.

Supporting the Army Rugby Team

The rugby 7’s tournament was not just about enjoying the sport; it was also an opportunity to support the Army Rugby team. Watching them play was a reminder of the discipline, teamwork, and resilience that sport instills in individuals. It was an honor to cheer them on and witness their commitment to excellence on the field.

The Power of Sport on Mental Health

One of the highlights of the day was engaging in conversations with serving personnel about the benefits of sport on mental health. The connection between physical activity and mental well-being is undeniable. Sports provide a constructive outlet for stress, promote camaraderie, and boost self-esteem. Discussing these benefits with those who serve our country reinforced the importance of initiatives that support mental health through sports.

Warriors of Hope: Animal-Assisted Therapy

I also had the pleasure of meeting James Evans, our TRiM (Trauma Risk Management) trainer for the Warriors of Hope animal-assisted therapy program, which SAVSIM CIC runs in partnership with the Zoological Society of London (ZSL). This innovative program leverages the therapeutic power of animals to support mental health and well-being. It was fantastic to see James and discuss the positive impact this program is having on participants.

To capture this memorable day, I managed to get a selfie with James Evans, marking a moment of unity and shared purpose in our efforts to promote mental health through unique and effective methods.

A Day to Remember

Attending the rugby 7’s tournament at AFC Wimbledon stadium was more than just a day out; it was a celebration of teamwork, resilience, and the power of sport to bring communities together and support mental health. As we continue our work at SAVSIM CIC, I am inspired by the dedication of our partners and the positive impact of our programs. Together, we are making a difference, one project and one conversation at a time.

Thank you to everyone who made this day possible and to those who continue to support our mission. Let’s keep pushing forward, promoting well-being through sport and innovative therapy programs, and building stronger, healthier communities.
